How Often Should You Sweep Your Chimney?

If you burn wood, your chimney collects creosote and soot every time you light a fire. Creosote is flammable, and too much of it can restrict airflow and increase the risk of a chimney fire.
How often you need a sweep depends on how much you burn, what you burn and how your appliance is set up. Burning damp or unseasoned wood builds up creosote faster. As a general rule, a chimney should be checked every year, and swept when the buildup is thick enough to be a concern.
Not sure whether yours needs it? We start with a basic ground-level check and tell you honestly if sweeping is required. If it isn’t, we won’t sweep it.
